CULTURAL HEALTH INDICATOR REPORT





Proposed development within a very culturally important area for Maori, a CHI is conducted by Tiakina te Taiao iwi monitors who monitor and capture data through a Te Ao Māori approach. The CHI framework is a method developed in 2003 and designed to assess waterways at the interface of scientific and cultural monitoring.

CULTURAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT





A CIA provides the resource consent applicant with an assessment of potential effects on iwi cultural values. The purpose of a CIA is to assess whether adverse effects identified can be avoided, remedied or mitigated.

CONSULTATION PROPOSAL





A Consultation Proposal is an initial review of a proposed activity to ascertain whether a Cultural Impact Assessment is required eg: an existing or adhoc activity wishes to ascertain cultural impacts before commencing the Resource Consent process.

FISH RELOCATION





Earthworks around local waterways can require the need to relocate fish to habitats where they will be safe. Tiakina Iwi Monitors are trained to safely isolate the area from the live watercourse, capturing the fish safely in nets and relocating them to a new home.

FRESHWATER STREAMS/RIVERS SURVEYS





Tiakina Te Taiao represents three Mana whenua Iwi of Nelson Tasman region. The health of the rivers in our catchment has always been a high priority with Iwi. Tiakina has secured funding to introduce school students to the rivers and streams in our region to give a cultural perspective based on a science / matauranga platform. In collaboration with the Cawthron institute Tiakina staff trained to be able to take water samples and have them tested at the Cawthron laboratories. The tests can detect the presence of various toxic substances including Ecoli. This work is consistent with our role as Kaitiaki.
